The aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the subject of palliative care nursing. After covering the key principles of this area of nursing care, a series of competency self-assessment exercises are offered to enable a nurse to assess their own skills and to draw up an action plan for development. A case study, with accompanying activities which encourage you to reflect on key palliative care competencies, is also presented.

This course is primarily aimed at nurses and health professionals who come into contact with, and manage the care of, patients in a palliative setting. Although less experienced nurses will gain the most from the course, the focus on competence assessment means that experienced palliative nurses will find benefit from reassessing their knowledge and skills. The course will also be of value to anyone who has an interest in palliative care nursing in general.
This course has been developed by Bob Becker. Bob holds a full-time, Senior Lecturer in Palliative Care, joint teaching appointment between Staffordshire University Faculty of Health and Science and the Severn Hospice in Shropshire, England. He runs a range of palliative and cancer care modules for the university and provides palliative care teaching to statutory, voluntary and charitable organisations as part of his hospice role.
Bob has developed a teaching and advisory role in a number of European countries and is an experienced external examiner to several universities. He is also an active member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Palliative Nursing and has an extensive publishing profile.
