I'm a R.N in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty. There is only one cancer unit in Tauranga, currently with no foreseeable job openings. My children are finishing their final years of school, so I am unable to move to a larger city with more options and opportunities to find a job and train in Oncology for another two years yet.
Can anyone tell me the best options I can take at this point, that will help me in the future to secure an oncology placement?
Thanks!
Hi Cathy,
I had written a long reply and managed to loose it when trying to post-so here is a short version.
1 Do as many of the courses on this website as you can.
2 Find other websites that offer free learning e.g www.learnzone.macmillan.org.uk www.cme.medscape.com/nurses
3 Make the most of your present jobs learning opportunities. Acquire as many skills as you can, they will be useful in your future career in oncology and make you a well rounded nurse better able to provide holistic care to patients often with co-morbidities.
4 Ensure you are reflecting and learning in your present practice. Evidence of this will be a points winner for you when a future manager is looking for a proven committed professional.
5 Arrange a meeting with the nurse in charge of the unit and let them see your desire for an oncology post. Learn what sort of person they are looking for in a new recruit.
6 Dinnae give up on your dream.
Hope this is some help.
Best of luck.
Gordon
